Manali to Shukto Drive via Udaipur (170 km | 7–8 hrs)

Your journey begins with a scenic drive from Manali through the iconic Atal Tunnel, which opens up to the arid beauty of the Lahaul Valley. The road passes through Keylong, then heads toward Udaipur, a cultural gem known for the Mrikula Devi Temple.

From Udaipur, you drive alongside the fierce Miyar Nala to reach the remote village of Shukto—the gateway to Miyar Valley. Cross a wooden suspension bridge to reach your first night’s campsite amidst cedar trees and glacial streams.

  • Altitude: ~3,300 m

  • Travel Tip: Keep your camera ready after crossing the Atal Tunnel—landscape changes drastically from green Kullu to stark Lahaul.

  • Overnight: Camp at Shukto

Shukto to Tharang (6–7 km | 4–5 hrs)

Begin your trek along a scenic forest trail, gradually ascending through birch groves, grazing pastures, and river crossings. The terrain is undulating but not steep, making for a comfortable warm-up day.

Tharang is a beautiful meadow campsite by the river, surrounded by towering cliffs and alpine greenery—perfect for an introduction to Miyar's serenity. We will be crossing through Khanjer, Doksa and cross a suspension bridge over Udhampur Nala.

  • Altitude: ~3,700 m

  • Highlights: Gaddi shepherd settlements, wildflowers, birdlife

  • Overnight: Camp at Tharang

Tharang to Zardong (12 km | 6-7 hrs)

Today’s trail opens up into wide, glacial valleys dotted with wildflowers. You'll cross moraine patches, riverbeds, and possibly small snow bridges, depending on the season, Tharang Nala, via Gompa Lake and Gompa camp also known as Gumba Got. The air starts to feel thinner, and the landscape becomes more expansive.

Zardong is another stunning high-altitude campsite with wide 360° views of snow-capped ridgelines.

  • Altitude: ~3,900 m

  • Highlights: Expansive views, wildlife sightings (blue sheep, marmots), rare alpine flora

  • Overnight: Camp at Zardong

Zardong to Palpu (Kesar Yon Chhu) (10 km | 5 hrs)

A relatively challenging day, you’ll hike further into the heart of the Miyar Valley, through moraine and scree zone, . The valley widens further as you approach Chhudong, a spot where the Miyar Nala fans out into braided streams across vast meadows. Beyond the gentle meadows of Chhudong, the valley transforms into a dramatic landscape of scattered boulders and glacial streams. One such icy stream flows from the base of Castle Peak and the elusive Never Seen Tower, adding a sense of raw wilderness to the trail. As you walk beside the river, the path eases out, meandering through shimmering water crossings and rock-strewn terrain.

Just ahead lies Palpu, a serene campsite nestled close to Castle Peak. On a clear day, if luck favors you, the majestic Menthosa Peak reveals itself—an unforgettable moment in the heart of Miyar.

Altitude: ~4,000 m

  • Highlights: Breathtaking meadows, complete wilderness, Castle Peak in sight

  • Overnight: Camp at Palpu

Palpu to Gompa (15 km | 4 hrs)

This day brings you closer to the upper reaches of the valley. We get up early morning to visit the snout of the origin of the Miyar Nala that is Miyar Glacier. From here, you get direct views of Khaminger Glacier, Menthosa Peak (6,443 m), and surrounding icefields. The terrain is rugged but manageable. After returning to campsite, have your breakfast and gradually descend toward Gompa, an open campsite named after a small abandoned monk hut nearby.

  • Highlights: Icefalls, close-up of Menthosa, glacier view, excellent sunrise/sunset spot

  • Overnight: Camp at Gompa

Gompa to Khanjar or Shukto (15+ km | 7–8 hrs)

Today is a long but scenic descent back down the valley. Depending on weather and group condition, you can either stop at Khanjar—a small settlement near the river—or push further to return to Shukto.

You'll retrace your route through meadows, cross multiple streams, and descend alongside the Miyar Nala.

  • Altitude: ~3,300–3,600 m

  • Highlights: Reflection shots in the river, time to absorb the beauty you missed while ascending

  • Overnight: Camp at Khanjar or Shukto

Drive Back to Manali (170 km | 7–8 hrs)

After breakfast, board the vehicles for your drive back to Manali. As you descend from the ruggedness of Lahaul to the green valleys of Kullu, you'll carry with you the memories of a truly untamed Himalayan experience.
