In the grand kingdom of the Indian Himalayas, one name echoes with awe, mystery, and thrill — Roopkund. Known worldwide as the Skeleton Lake, Roopkund lies shrouded in legend and folklore, making it a magnet for trekkers, adventurers, historians, and spiritual seekers alike. Located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, this high-altitude glacial lake is perched at an elevation of 16,470 ft (5,020 meters) in the shadow of Trishul Massif and the mighty Mt. Nanda Ghunti.
Roopkund has earned its global fame for the eerie human skeletons found at its edge. Hundreds of bones and skulls, dating back to the 9th century, have been discovered frozen in and around the lake. Theories abound — was it a royal procession caught in a hailstorm, a pilgrimage gone wrong, or something else entirely? This mystery makes Roopkund not just a trekking destination, but a historical enigma, drawing archaeologists, anthropologists, and curious minds from around the world.
Despite the chilling name and story, Roopkund is deeply connected to Hindu mythology. Legend says that Goddess Nanda Devi caused a hailstorm to strike down a king and his entourage for disrespecting the mountain’s sanctity. The name "Roopkund" itself, meaning "Lake of Beauty," hints at a myth where the Goddess Nanda Devi once glimpsed her reflection in the crystal-clear water.
The Roopkund Trek is regarded as one of the best high-altitude treks in India, offering a blend of mythology, adventure, alpine scenery, and raw Himalayan wilderness. The trail begins from Lohajung/Wan, a small village in the Garhwal Himalayas, and passes through scenic hamlets, dense oak and rhododendron forests, gurgling mountain streams, and vast alpine meadows.
Wan to Gairoli Patal: A scenic trail through dense forest and remote mountain villages.
Ali Bugyal & Bedni Bugyal: Among the most beautiful Himalayan meadows, offering panoramic views of Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, and Chaukhamba. During monsoon, these meadows are dotted with vibrant wildflowers.
Pathar Nachauni to Bhagwabasa: The terrain becomes more rugged and challenging, with panoramic views and chances of snowfall even in early summer.
Kalu Vinayak Top: A mountain top just between the trail from Pathar Nachauni to Bhagwabasa, where a small temple is located dedicated to Lord Ganesha. This Top provides an amazing panoramic views of amazing famous peaks of Garhwal like Chaukhmaba, Nilkantha, Kamet, Jaonli, Kedar dome, Kedar, Bhartekunta and others. With Mount Trishul and Nanda Ghunti stands just infront with it's huge shape.
Roopkund Lake and Junargali Pass: A heart-pounding climb to reach the Skeleton Lake, with the optional extension to Junargali Pass (subject to weather and conditions).
Best time for Roopkund :- Best time for Roopkund is either from Mid May to June, and from end September to October. One could get snowy trails in pre monsoon, and vibrant flowers in Ali Bedni Bugyal during post monsoon.
