Dafeybhir La Trek

The Dafeybhir La Trek (also known as the Singalila Round Trek) is one of the most enchanting yet lesser-known high-altitude treks in the Indian Himalayas. Tucked away in West Sikkim, this trail follows the historic Singalila Ridge bordering India and Nepal, offering trekkers a blend of raw wilderness, rich cultural immersion, and breathtaking Himalayan panoramas.

Unlike the more popular Goechala Trek or Sandakphu-Phalut Trek, Dafeybhir La remains untouched, making it a rare gem for those who want to walk on the same ridges pioneered by Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, the legendary Everest summiteer. From pristine rhododendron forests to a stunning circuit of alpine glacial lakes, and from remote camping sites to majestic views of the Sleeping Buddha formation of Kanchenjunga along with Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu—the Dafeybhir La Trek promises an adventure that goes beyond just trekking.

The trek begins from the quiet Sangkhola Village in West Sikkim, moving northwards along the Singalila Ridge that divides Sikkim and Nepal. While the Sandakphu trek usually explores the southern Singalila range, the Dafeybhir La trail ventures much further north, opening up panoramic Himalayan views for days on end.

This trail is a unique blend of landscapes:

  • Steep and rocky climbs that test your endurance.

  • Lush valleys and dense oak–fir–rhododendron forests echoing with the sounds of Himalayan birds.

  • Fast-flowing rivers and streams, perfect for refreshing breaks.

  • A circuit of 10+ alpine lakes, including famous ones like Nepal Jumley Pokhri (twin lakes), Lampokhri (longitudinal lake), and Sikkim Jumley (Ram & Laxman Pokhri).

Once you cross Lampokhari and move further along the ridge, the world opens up with uninterrupted views of the Sleeping Buddha (Kanchenjunga) and neighboring peaks. For more than two days, trekkers continue on high ridges, walking in parallel with the grandeur of the Himalayas on one side and Nepal’s rolling valleys on the other.

What makes Dafeybhir La even more special is its connection to other classic treks. Adventurers can extend the route to include Dzongri and Goechala, making it one of the most versatile trails in Sikkim.

Highlights of Dafeybhir La Trek

  • Pristine Forest Trails – Traverse untouched forests of rhododendron, fir, bamboo, and oak. In spring, the rhododendrons bloom in fiery reds and pinks, turning the trail into a fairyland.

  • Alpine Lakes Circuit – The crown jewel of the trek. Discover 7–12 high-altitude lakes spread across the trail. Some are directly on the route, while others require a short detour. Each lake, like Nepal Jumley Pokhri, Lampokhri, and Ram–Laxman Pokhri, carries legends and stories tied to local traditions.

  • Unmatched Himalayan Views – For days, walk with the Sleeping Buddha (Kanchenjunga massif) in front of you. On clear days, distant giants like Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu are also visible.

  • Remote Camping Experience – Stay at campsites like Nayapatal, Lampokhri, Jumlay Pokhri, and Bajredara, far away from settlements. Nights under starry skies at these high altitudes are unforgettable.

  • Cultural Immersion – Begin the trek from Sangkhola and descend near Samtek, experiencing warm Sikkimese hospitality in Gorkhali and Sherpa villages.

  • Historic Legacy – Walk on trails once pioneered by Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, adding a sense of Himalayan legacy to the adventure.
